This proverb is quite well-known and famous but do we all know what it really means? It means you have to relate to a person in order for them to like you. This is because people love talking about themselves. Their favorite subject is anything related to them. They love hearing their name and they like people who agree with them. So, once you relate to a person, they are more inclined to like you. And if they like you, there are more likely to be persuaded and influenced by you.

It’s not just about relating to someone but also doing what they do. It could be as simple as copying their actions or their reaction to something. But once they see that have become a part of their thoughts/country/conversation, they will be easier to persuade and influence.
